Text: PrenticeHall: Precalculus – Graphing and Data Analysis, Sullivan and Sullivan
Course Description: This one semester course covers chapters 9, 10, 12, and 14 of the text. Topics covered include an introduction to polar coordinates and vectors, more work with conic sections, a review of the binomial theorem, sequences, and induction, and an introduction to calculus.
Expectations: Students are expected to be in class on time each day, ready to learn, with the following: a textbook, a completed homework, a sharpened pencil, a math notebook for taking notes and starting homework. Students are expected to ask questions about problems they don't understand. Students are expected to follow school rules and show respect for the learning process.
Homework: Homework will be assigned daily, including Fridays, and gone over in class the day after it is assigned. Homework is essential to success in math. Students who do not practice the skills taught in class will find they are not successful on tests. Homework will be collected on test days and graded for completeness and process.
Tests: An assessment will be given approximately every 2 weeks. Tests will be returned the next class day and gone over, therefore, makeup tests will not be given after a test has been returned, except under extreme circumstances. Students returning from an unplanned absence where they missed a test will be expected to take that test on the day of their return. If the absence is planned, they will need to take the test before they are out.
Grading: Marking period grades will be based on home and class work (20%), and tests (80%). The marking period grades will make up 85% of the semester grade. The final will count for the remaining 15%.
A standard grading scale will be used:
Citizenship: A citizenship grade is earned based on classroom behavior, attendance, and punctuality. Adherence to school rules is essential for a good citizenship grade.
Attendance: Students are expected to attend class every day. Unexcused absences will result in a 0 for all missed work - even if the missed class had a test. Excessive absences or tardies will result in phone calls home, and referral to the counseling office. More than 10 tardies for the semester will result in an automatic U for citizenship.
Extra Help: I am available for extra help during my prep period (mods 6-7) and sometimes during lunch (mods 16-17). Otherwise, you can come to the math office (room 344) to see me or any other math teacher for help. Extra help is also available after school through he Math Club or CSF.
